KOTA KINABALU: Community Development and Consumer Affairs Minister, Datuk Jainab Ahmad Ayid has called on Sabah Women Advisory Council (MPMS) to look into the various laws in the country – the Civil Law, the Criminal Law, the Syariah Law and the Native Law – and ensure all these laws were not in conflict with each other.

“We don’t want people to use the laws to get away from a crime they have committed,” she said after witnessing the swearing-in of 11 MPWS members yesterday.

She said MPMS has also been asked to look into family education aimed at promoting happy and responsible families.

“At the same time, I would also like to see MPMS play a part in making buildings that are friendly for our elders and disabled members of the community. In China, buildings have areas where their elders can perform some exercises and mothers are able to feed their babies,” she said.

In this respect, she called for MPMS to partner with the various government agencies and other bodies to work towards the welfare of the whole community.

Jainab also stressed on the continued fight for more women participation as decision makers.

“Some 70 per cent of women attend university but only in terms of those given seniority level, there is only a small number of them,” she said.

Aside from that, Jainab also urged Internet users and contributors such as bloggers, to be responsible when airing their views on the Internet.

“It is sad but there are individuals teaching others how to commit suicide on the Internet. In my own constituency, there have been cases of people committing suicide. Is it because of poverty?

“People need to be told that they do not need to end everything because of hardship. Perpetrators prey on young children, on women, they post harmful information on the Internet…In China, they (the government) have blocked bloggers and facebook, and in Singapore, they have also done something (to curb Internet users). In Malaysia, we still allow,” she said.
