SINGAPORE: An editor of Tiger Airways’ inflight magazine was fined S$10,000 (about US$7,980) by a Singapore court on Thursday for spitting on a police officer’s face.
Local television Channel NewsAsia (CNA) reported the 34-year-old British national, Forgan Duncan, pleaded guilty to spitting on the face of officer Walid Jamblatt Abdullah at about 1am on Dec 19 last year.
Duncan was found lying on the ground along Spottiswoode Park Road after having taken many drinks before making his way back to his residence.
Two police officers, who were notified, checked on him.
Duncan, however, challenged the officers to arrest him and spat on officer Walid Jamblatt’s face after he was handcuffed.
One other charge of behaving in a disorderly manner was also taken into consideration.
Duncan’s lawyer said in his mitigation plea that his client was “extremely remorseful, unconditionally apologetic and thoroughly ashamed for his conduct”.
The prosecution pressed for a custodial sentence, but District Judge Ronald Gwee said a high fine would suffice.
Duncan could have been jailed up to four years and fined for spitting on the officer. — Bernama
