KOTA KINABALU: There is great potential in Lumadan for development of the tourism industry.

Assistant Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Kamarlin Ombi, who is also Lumadan assemblyman, feels that many do not realise but there is a lot of tourism product available in the district that can be promoted to both domestic and foreign visitors.

Speaking to reporters during the opening of the 14th State Assembly sitting here by Head of State Tun Juhar Mahiruddin yesterday, he said, there is, however, a need for better basic infrastructure development to facilitate the development of the tourism sector in the area.

“Infrastructures such as paths, boats and other facilities are needed to access the beautiful places in Lumadan,” he said.

He gave Weston as an example that is not only rich with its flora, but also with its fauna as well as the presence of proboscis monkeys and fireflies.

Kamarlin hoped these facilities can be implemented in the next two to three years time.

“It would eventually be inviting not only to visitors but also researchers to the area to learn the many species of animals found there,” he said.

He said, the increase in the number of tourists and researchers would improve the local people’s livelihood.
