KOTA KINABALU: A local man was killed while nine others were injured, two seriously, when the four-wheel-drive vehicle they were traveling in plunged into a 30-meter ravine at Jalan Bukit Kokol in Menggatal yesterday.

Doukin Sabin, 51, from Kampung Tombongon, Menggatal, who was a passenger in the Mitsubishi Pajero, died at the scene in the 4pm incident.

Two of his relatives, a man and a woman, whose identity and age were not determined, suffered serious injuries and had been taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for treatment.

Seven others managed to climb out of the vehicle and sought outpatient treatment in the hospital.

It was learnt that the victims, including five siblings of Doukin, mother and three relatives, aged between 30 and 50, were on their way home from Menggatal when the driver lost control of the vehicle.

Fire and Rescue Department public relations officer Senior Assistant Superintendent Mohd Affendy Ramin said a distress call was received at 4.14pm and 13 personnel were sent to the scene.

According to Affendy, three people were pinned in the vehicle and it took the Fire and Rescue personnel more than one hour to free them.

“Initial investigation revealed that the driver had lost control of the vehicle and it skidded off the road.

“The remaining victims have been taken to hospital in an ambulance while the cause of the incident was still under investigation,” he said.

Meanwhile, city police chief ACP Jauteh Dikun said investigation was still ongoing to determine the actual cause of the accident.

He urged eyewitnesses to come forward to assist police in their investigation.
