Work on LNG Train 9 on schedule

BINTULU: Work on the Ninth LNG Train (Train 9) at Petronas LNG Complex here is expected to hit full steam by end of this year and into 2014.

Managing director and chief executive officer of Malaysia LNG Group of Companies, Zakaria Kasah, said that engineering activities were still ongoing in their contractor JGC Corp’s facilities in Yokohama, Japan, but they were still on schedule.

“The project is going very well. We are lucky because the contractor built the previous trains in LNG. In terms of familiarity as well as local knowledge, we are quite confident of the capability of the contractors for the Train 9 project,” he told reporters here yesterday.

“Liquefied natural gas has always been deemed as energy of the future because it is ‘green’ gas.

“We anticipate in future that there will be more industries switching from coal to LNG as a means to produce energy. We are also in communication with our current buyers for an extension of contract. We are quite confident and that’s why Train 9 is in place,” Zakaria said.

He added that MLNG kept an impeccable track record for the past 35 years, supplying without fail and would continue to do so.

“We are quite confident that our long term customers in the Asia Pacific – China Japan, Korea, and even India – are willing to negotiate and agree to us being their main LNG supplier.”

Petronas awarded the engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning (EPCC) contract worth about US$2 billion to JGC Corp earlier this year.
