SIBU: Teachers here have been urged to brace themselves for greater challenges ahead.

In giving the advice, divisional Education officer Wong Chung Kung urged teachers to be responsive to changes in the education system.

Wong, speaking at a divisional level Teachers’ Day celebration at Kingwood Hotel here Thursday, also warned teachers against complacency.

“Don’t be easily satisfied with what you’ve achieved. Remain alert and always strive to move up the rungs of the ladder of your profession.

“Be the ‘paradigm breaker’, which means, find new things in education issues, be innovative and inventive in your profession, only then can teachers fulfil the vision and mission of the country’s education system,” he said.

In addition, teachers need to be well-informed in current affairs, he added.

Meanwhile, Tamin assemblyman Datuk Joseph Mauh Ikeh, who officiated at the function, said the government had introduced transformation programmes in part to ensure the country’s educational field would remain competitive.

“We need to change our education system to cater to the demand globally,” he said.

While expecting teachers to be committed in their profession, Joseph urged teachers to help their students to learn more languages.

“This will stand them in good stead in the future when they enter the workforce,” he explained.
