Cop killed as motorbike hit by car

PAPAR: A policeman was killed when the motorcycle he was riding was hit by a car at Kinarut-Papar road, near Bukit Melinsung at about 3pm yesterday.

The victim, identified as Corporal Elis Ampanatan, 55, who was attached to the Tanjung Aru Police Station, died at the scene of head injuries.

After the victim’s motorbike was hit by the oncoming Proton Wira car that was said to be overtaking another vehicle, the driver of a Honda car behind the victim was forced to brake abruptly, resulting in a separate collision involving two other vehicles, namely a pick-up truck and a taxi.

The victim, who was believed to be on his way to work from his home at Kampung Melinsung, Papar, was thrown several meters from the point of impact.

The driver of the Honda car was said to be trying to avoid hitting the victim but when he braked, the car was hit by the pick-up truck which was in turn hit by the taxi.

A woman passenger in the Honda car was injured and taken to Papar Hospital where she was given outpatient treatment.

Meanwhile, Papar police chief DSP George Abd Rakman, when contacted, said the victim’s body was taken to the hospital for a post-mortem.

George said the driver of the Proton Wira car had been remanded to facilitate investigation under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

He urged eyewitnesses to come forward to assist police in the investigation.
