Two students killed in motorbike-car crash

PUTATAN: Two 17-year-old female students from SMK Tansau were yesterday killed when the motorcycle they were riding collided with a Toyota Avanza vehicle at Jalan Ketiau, near Kampung Tansau, here yesterday.

Both Juan Jun Gabriel and Normaiziatul Noriah Datu Kadir, who was riding pillion, died at the scene after sustaining serious head and body injuries in the 10.15am incident.

The girls, who were classmates, were on their way home from school, about one kilometer away, when Juan was believed to have lost control of the Honda EX5 motorbike which veered to the opposite lane into the path of the oncoming Avanza that came from the direction of Kampung Ketiau. The impact of the collision killed both victims on the spot.

It was learnt that the two From 5 students had gone to the school to attend an extra lesson in preparation for their Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) this year.

Meanwhile, Penampang police chief DSP Ratan Kumar Singh, when contacted, said the 40-year-old Toyota Avanza driver has been remanded for investigation under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

He said the victims’ bodies have been taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for a post-mortem.

He urged eyewitnesses to come forward to assist police in their investigation.
