KUCHING: Longshot Bintang Kilong caused an upset when it beat hot favourite Budak Kampung after a keen tussle in Race Five (Class 1 – 1000M) on Sunday.
The four-year-old, ridden by apprentice Azizi Jasmi, was given only an outside chance but it turned up trumps, winning with a spirited fightback to pay a good divided of RM64.
Bintang Kilong was quickly into strides from a clean start, making an early break as the field settled down past the 800M mark.
The Penny Stable’s galloper led round the home turn and into the final straight but came under pressure from Budak Kampung (Roslan Bujang) and Money Come (Jasmi Kamar) as the race quickly developed into a three-way battle halfway down the home straight.
Budak Kampung hit the front past the 200M mark and looked a distinct possibility as Money Come started to fade.
Bintang Kilong was not done yet. Switched to the outside for the run, the rangy roan racer pounced to regain the lead with 150M left, holding off the challenge from Budak Kampung to win by half length in an exciting finish.
Money Come was third 5 1/2 lengths away.
Three runners wound up the June meeting with a double each.
Peace Pipe (Othman Putit) which scored convincingly on the first weekend, was equally impressive on Sunday, winning Race One (Class 5 — 1000M) by a distance from Stranger (Maruf Wahab) to pay RM6.
Precious Moment (Hamid Ellie) finished a long third.
He Is The One had no trouble duplicating its easy win on the first the weekend with another unchallenged victory in Race Two (Class 4 – 1000M), paying RM6.
Little Apache (Jasmi Kamar) finished second 7 1/2 lengths adrift with Big Chief (Roslan Bujang) third, two lengths further back.
Dream Lobo (Mazlan Bujang), promoted after scoring an easy win on the first weekend, produced the same form to score again in Race Four (Class Two -1000M), edging Royal Command (Othman Putit) by a neck to pay RM11.

The going was good.
