Joseph Lau clinches maiden win in Sarawak Senior Amateur Closed

KUCHING: Joseph Lau Ka Hoo emerged the new winner of the 4th Sarawak Senior Amateur Closed golf championship after he posted a two-day total gross score of 160 to lift the Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr Wong Soon Kai Challenge Trophy.

The 56-year-old golfer from Sarawak Golf Club (KGS), who trailed first day leader Hoan Kee Hock by three strokes, charged into the final round yesterday with an 83 as the former faltered with an 88 in blistering conditions at the greens of KGS.

Two-time winner (2010 and 2011) Sigar Tidan of Bintulu Golf Club, posted a similar score of 82 to finish strongly in third position with a total of 164 while two strokes further back in fourth place was Mohd Ashari.

Finishing in fifth to eighth positions were Michael Lim (167), Mohd Nasir (170), KGS general manager Bernard Lee (171) and Tan Chek Khan (173).

Ashari also picked up another prize as he scored an eagle at Hole 15 yesterday.

In the nett category, the winner was Ismail Dol who had a two-day total of 135, followed by Ali Sujang two strokes further back and Bill Lu was third on 142.

Roland Ling was fourth with 143 while KGS golf captain Abdul Jalil was fifth with a 144.

The sixth to 10th spots were occupied by Peter Lee (145-OCB), Lau Shieh Yuan (145-OCB), Lawrence Tan (145-OCB), Mohamad Ibrahim (145) and Peter Si (146).

Annuar Abu Bakar won in the 55-56 years old category with his score of 147 while Phang Nam Yong pipped Mazlan Mohd Salleh to second place on count back after both players registered similar scores of 148.

The champion of the 66-67 years old category was Bujang Setawi (147) while the runner-up and third placing were Bernard Kiew (151) and Sia Chui Sing (152) respectively.

In the 76 years old and above contest, Andrew Teng scored 149 to take the title, followed by Augustine Lee (153) and Umar Saili (158) respectively in second and third spots.

One hundred and thirteen golfers from affiliate clubs of the Sarawak Golf Association took part in the two-day competition.
