ALL THE BEST: Lu pins a parting medal onto Ngu while Lau looks on.

SIBU: Chairman of SM Wong Nai Siong School Board of Directors, Vincent Lau Lee Ming, says the school will continue to provide the best of Chinese education to its students.

He advised students to study hard to sustain the good reputation of the school.

“This ensures that the school will remain relevant as we strive to become an outstanding Chinese independent school here,” he said.

Lau was speaking at an assembly at the school to mark the retirement of the principal, Timothy Ngu Hua Kwong.

Among those present were deputy chairman Chieng Buong Toon and assistant principal Lu Yew Hiung.

“We need to pour in extra resources and ensure that the future generation of students will enjoy the best of facilities available at the school,” Lau said.

He acknowledged Ngu’s immense efforts to ensure that the school remained one of the top Chinese independent schools here.

He recalled that the school hit its lowest point in the early 1990s when there were barely 100 students.

In 2002, the school managed to engage Ngu, a former principal of SMK Tung Hua, as the principal.

“His arrival not only injected fresh life into the school over the next 11 years but brought new hope and belief that the school would continue to progress and improve.”

Lau appreciated Ngu for his tremendous efforts in revamping and restructuring the school.

“Today, we have more than 500 students, and good facilities such as an IT library, a performance stage, a laboratory and a big basketball court that can easily accommodate over 400 people at any one time.”

He described Ngu as a committed and dedicated person who was always willing to sacrifice his time to work non-stop for the betterment of the school.

On the academic side, Lau said the school had produced a string of marvellous results in both the Junior and Senior Middle Three students.

The school emerged champion in the 2007 6th UCA President Debate Cup and the first runner-up in the 10th Central Chinese Independent Schools Debate Championship in 2010.

“We also excel in sports like wushu and chess and this further enhance the reputation of the school as one of the top Chinese independent schools here.”

Lau also announced the promotion of Lu as the 7th principal of the school with immediate effect.

Yu Yieng Ching replaces Lu as the assistant principal.
