59 to compete in Sarawak Under 18 badminton tourney

KUCHING: Twin brothers Adam Lau Yu Ming and Alfred Lau Yu Leong are among the 59 players who will be competing in the Sarawak Under 18 championship to be held at Sarawak Badminton Association (SBA) Hall today.

The event is divided various categories namely boys’ singles and doubles, girls’ singles and doubles as well as mixed doubles.

Adam, who is ranked as top seed in boys’ singles is representing SBA and had receives a first round bye. He is expected to meet Mohd Ahmad Nazri Tok Mohd Alif Shan of Chong Cheong Yong Training Academy (CCY) in the second round.

Second seed James Liaw Hyuen Gloong of Miri Badminton Association (MBA) will also open his campaign with a first round bye and he is expected to face CCY’s Adrian Lim Jin Haw in the second round.

Joint third/fourth seeds are Wong Teck Chung and Clement Chieng Jia Yew, both from Pacific Badminton Management (PBM).

In the boys’ doubles competition, tournament favourites are Adam Lau and Alfred Lau (SBA) who have been given a first round bye.

They will meet Benjamin Then-Thian Nyuk Ming of CCY in round two while second seeds Clement Chieng (PBM)-James Liaw (MR), also given a first round bye, will have to play Adrian Lim Jin Haw-Jeremy Yeo (CCY) in the second round.

Ranked joint third/fourth seeds are Jonathan Kho Kai (PBM)-Kam Sing Siong (MR), and PBM’s Gerald Ong Zhi Li-Wong Teck Chong.

There are only four contestants in the girls’ singles namely Hafizah Zulkifli, Kourtney Kho Ker Yin, Grace Voon Ern Hui from SBA and Yong Ping Ping of MBA.

The girls’ doubles contest will only see three pairs – Goh Suk Yun (MR)-Immanlany Jose (Baram Badminton Association), Kourtney Kho-Viviene Kua (SBA) and Hafizah Zulkifli-Stella Thien (SBA).

In the mixed doubles, the contestants are Kam Sing Siong-Goh Suk Yun and Donaven Sujang Majang-Yong Ping Ping of MR, Alfred Lau-Viviene Kua (SBA), Kueh Jian Terng (Kuching)-Stella Thien (SBA) and Eric Ngu Chieng Puu (MR)-Immanlany Jose (Baram).

The clubs taking part in the three-day championship are Baram Badminton Association, Kuching Badminton Association, Miri Badminton Association, Pacific Badminton Management, Chong Cheong Yong Trading Centre, Kuching, Pro Wira Sibu and Thumb’s Up Badminton Academy.
