KUCHING: Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) has called on the police to have a backup system and generators in police stations to cope with power failures.

Its women national vice president Voon Shiak Ni said during the blackout on Thursday, the public could not lodge police reports at the One Stop Centre at Jalan Simpang Tiga because there was no electricity and telephone lines were down.

“We also received a call from the public from Mile 10 bazaar, stating that the police station there was also in darkness. It came as a surprise to the public as to why there are no backup system and generator in the police stations to cope with power failures,” she said in a press statement yesterday.

Voon said the matter was very serious because their complaints could not be attended by the police during the blackout.

“Therefore, we wish to send a reminder to the authorities that police stations should have backup systems and generators to cope with power failure.

Meanwhile, Voon said Sarawak Energy Bhd should seriously look into addressing the issue of power failures which happened quite frequently.

“The massive black out on Thursday in the state had caused much inconveniences to the public. The inconveniences and losses to the public are beyond assessment but the more pertinent concern was the effects of the blackout on security of the public.”
