Kuching to host Asia TEFL 12th international conference in August

KUCHING: Borneo Convention Centre Kuching will have the honour of hosting the Asia TEFL (Teaching English as Foreign Language) 12th International Conference 2014 on Aug 28-30.

This will be the second time it is held in Malaysia and the first in Kuching, said Asia TELF president Professor Lee Hyo-Woong.

He said Asia TELF is the largest English language teaching event in Asia and the international conference will focus on providing a regional platform for English teachers and trainers to connect with various English language institutes around Asia.

“The annual event is for English language teachers to meet and discuss ways to promote the use of proper English through present and new methodologies and opportunity to gain knowledge through the workshops and talks,” said Lee at a press conference
yesterday.

Lee was part of the delegation with the Malaysia English Language Teaching Association (Melta) president Associate Professor Dr Ganakumaran Subramaniam’s courtesy visit to the Welfare, Women and Family Development Ministry yesterday.

He revealed that Malaysia won the bidding to host the event against China that will host it in 2015.

The group was received by Assistant Welfare, Women and Family Development Minister Rosey Yunus at the ministry’s office.

“It is a great honour for Sarawak to be chosen to host the Asia TEFL 12th International Conference 2014. The last time Malaysia played host was in 2007. We are expecting 1,200 participants, of which 500 are from 36 member countries.”

She added that some 450 working papers will be presented by English Language experts during the three-day conference that will give the opportunity to local English teachers to share their experience and expertise in strengthening the teaching and educating process.

Also present was state Education Department representative Liew Jew Kiong.
