No immediate plans to evacuate Malaysians in Egypt — Wisma Putra

KUALA LUMPUR: Wisma Putra has no immediate plans to evacuate Malaysians in Egypt amid the worsening political crisis in the Arab country.

A Wisma Putra desk officer when contacted by Bernama said the situation in Egypt was still under control and all Malaysians there were safe, while there were no reports of Malaysians involved in the public rallies held in the country.

“Currently, there are 10,050 Malaysian students in Egypt and they have been advised to stay at home, stay away from the conflict areas and not to join the rallies,” he said.

The Foreign Ministry is also closely monitoring the latest developments on the demonstrations in Cairo and other major cities of Egypt.

The officer said in the last several days, these demonstrations had resulted in injuries to hundreds of people.

“With rising uncertainties, Malaysians are advised to postpone their visit to Egypt,” he said.

It was reported that thousands of demonstrators gathered in Tahrir Square, Cairo to demand the resignation of President Mohamed Morsi while on the other side of Cairo in Nasr City, thousands of pro-Morsi supporters gathered to show their support for the government.
