Terengganu top medal tally

The rowing competition of the 16th Sukma which ended yesterday at the National Rowing Training Centre in Batu Dam, Ulu Yam near here saw Terengganu flex their muscle, sweeping eight gold medals and one silver.

Terengganu took five gold with two through Nur Fatiha Che Yon Rosni in the women single scull (W1X) and double scull (LW2X) by Nor Shazlin Che Adnan and Che Ku Nurul Asma’ Cheku Abdullah.

Their three other rowing gold came from group of four lightweight (LW4-) comprising Ika Natasha Yahya, Siti Niartun Aniqah Anirad, Kasyifah Mohiddin and Siti Ratin Nabilah Mohd Ashini, in the women’s pair (W2) and men’s coxed eight.

Terengganu chief coach, Mohd Shahrol Mat Saad was satisfied with the outing. He said this proved the East Coast state were still the powerhouse of rowing despite emerging competitors such as Johor and Federal Territory.

Terengganu’s rowing achievement surpassed their best overall medal collection in 2011 in Kuala Lumpur then with five gold, one silver and two bronze.

The rowing gold haul today propelled the state to top the Sukma medal tally on the seventh day of competition with 16 gold, 10 silver and eight bronze.

The Federal Territories which had been leading the medal tally since Monday were pushed down to second place with 11 gold, nine silver and 16 bronze.

The success of Selangor’s gymnasts in clinching two gold through Daniel Iskandar Richard and Farah Ann Abdul Hadi in the men’s and women’s individual event enabled the seven-time Sukma champions to seize third position from Johor with 11 gold, six silver and 19 bronze.

A total of 35 medals will be up for grabs through the team synchronised swimming, men’s water polo, beach football (men and women), kabbadi (men and women) as well as Silambam ( men’s and women’s Special Thanithiramai). — Bernama
