S’wak to meet Perak in women’s volleyball semis

KUALA LUMPUR: Just as expected, Sarawak cruised to the semi-finals of the women’s volleyball competition after they thumped Perlis 3-0 in their quarterfinal match played at MBSA Hall at Section 19, Shah Alam yesterday.

Led by captain, Ho Xiao Hui, Sarawak had fielded Tina Tiong Yong Ting, Polly Sim Pei Yi, Angela Tang Ling Hui, Alicia Yii Chii Hui. Stephanie Law Feng Nie and Angela Wa Siew Ching who had proven to be too strong for Perlis in the first set. They quickly raced to a 10-0 lead and after Perlis called for a time out, Sarawak pulled ahead 23-3 and wrapped up with a 25-4 score.

Sarawak had the luxury of resting its key players in the next two sets and brought in second stringers like Chiu Hua Yun, Mabel Song Hua Mei, Alicia Yii, Euniecia Anthony, Kan Yong Ling and Ching Hui Ming. They took to the task by winning 25-9, 25-9 and sent Sarawak into the last four.

Sarawak will have to beat Perak in the semi-finals this afternoon to earn their place in the final.

In the other quarterfinals, last year’s third placing Perak had beaten Penang 3-0 (25-13, 25-21, 25-19) to set up the clash with Sarawak. Selangor had defeated Terengganu 3-1 while last year’s runners-up Johor had no problem in disposing of Pahang 3-0.

Today’s other semi-final will be fought between Johor and Selangor while the finals for both men and women are scheduled for Saturday.
