LIMBANG: Police will maintain tight control of the Sarawak-Indonesia border to keep trans-border crimes at bay.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Bakri Zinin said although trans-border crimes such as drug trafficking and firearms smuggling cases were under control, police would remain vigilant.

“In view of the long border with Indonesia, and with so many ‘Jalan Tikus’ and ‘Jalan Gajah’, we can’t say specifically which areas are commonly used by criminals.

“Nevertheless, security will continue to be given top priority attention, especially along routes believed to be frequented by criminals,” he told reporters here yesterday.

Mohd Bakri was here to witness the opening of the new Limbang District Police Headquarters (IPD) by Head of State Tun Datuk Patinggi Abang Muhamad Salahuddin.

Among those present were Head of State’s wife Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Norkiah, Limbang MP Hasbi Habibollah, Batu Danau assemblyman Paulus Palu Gumbang, Bukit Kota assemblyman Dr Abdul Rahman Ismail, State Police Commissioner Dato Acryl Sani Abdullah and his deputy Dato Law Hong Soon, Limbang Resident Maria Hasman and Limbang District Police chief Supertindent Mohd Bukhori Saffai.

Mohd Bakri said the state government had been giving inputs on ways to tighten security at the border areas. These included increasing manpower and nurturing close ties with the locals.

“Quality information and strong cooperation from the locals are important for us to act fast.”

Meanwhile, Acryl said Sarawak needed more border posts as about 70 per cent of the border areas were porous.

He said Sarawak police recently updated security data of the West and East Kalimantan borders following a meeting of the State Security Committee.

“We will soon send our proposal on border security to the state government, which will then forward it to the federal government,” he said.
