MIRI: The organisers of the ‘Charity Beach Cleaning’ at Luak Esplanade in Bakam near here were beaming with pride as the event was great success.

About 60 secondary school students and four teachers joined hands in clearing the debris at the beach and its surroundings, emptying the rubbish bins and cleaning the barbeque stalls.

Miri City Council (MCC) staff also gave their helping hands to ensure the campaign was carried out smoothly.

The charity project was initiated by the Youth Movement of Malaysian Red Crescent (MRC), Miri Chapter.

“This is to inculcate the love of keeping their city and beaches clean among the youths here.

“It also aims to encourage them to protect and preserve the environment,” a spokesman said.

Through the collaborated work party, the organisers also hoped to foster closer rapport between the MRC members and the public.

The spokesman said this was one of the activities held to reduce global warming in response to the government’s call, as well as create awareness among the youths of their responsibility towards the environment.

“We are concerned about keeping the beaches clean as the public regard them as recreation parks and leisure spots for picnics and gathering on weekends and holidays,” he added.

With clean beaches and surroundings, this would create a healthy environment for the public to enjoy.

The organisers hoped their initiative could set a fine example to other youth organisations to embark on more cleaning campaigns to keep the city clean.
