KOTA KINABALU: A total of 82 single moms will be benefiting from an economic transformation programme where they would be producing and selling salted eggs.

According to Community Development and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Jainab Ahmad Ayid at the launch of the programme dubbed, “Building capacity and creating alternative income for single mothers from Bongawan district”, the programme materialised through the collaboration of Talisman Malaysia Limited together with Pacos Trust and the Bongawan Single Mothers Association.

“The venture is expected to generate an income of RM160 per month for each of the single mothers taking part in the programme,” she said.

In the programme, they would be taught how to produce the eggs, how to market them as well as how to look after their book-keeping.

Meanwhile, a representative for Talisman Malaysia Berhad, Duncan Smart, said they would be funding the programme for a year with RM50,000.

“We believe that this micro enterprise of salted eggs production is a very meaningful project that will help in creating a sustainable income for the participants. We are particularly pleased that these single mothers will also be exposed to project planning, book-keeping, product marketing and working as a team,” he said.

The endeavour only needed mothers to work four days a month, thus having time for being the head of the family, he said.

He also said in order to motivate the ground and see how they were faring with the project, Talisman Malaysia had put in place an incentive in the form of an award at the end of 12 months.

“The winning group will get to win RM2,000 plus plaques and certificates,” he said.
