KUCHING:  Kampung Pejuang Kelulit at Sibuti, Miri won this year’s state-level Anugerah Desa Cemerlang/Anugerah Desa Sejahtera (ADC/ADS).

It defeated three other villages to represent the state at the national-level event.

The village received RM8,000 in cash prizes in this year’s excellent and prosperous village award.

Rural and Regional Development Deputy Minister Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi presented the award to its penghulu Junit Molok and village chief Hamdan Taha at a ceremony held at the Youth and Sports Complex here on Saturday.

In second place was Kpg Sebandi Ulu in Asajaya, Kota Samarahan which received RM6,000 while third-placed Kpg Assyakirin Phase I of Bintulu, RM4,000 and fourth-placed Kpg Long Semadoh Naseb from Lawas, the RM1,000 consolation prize.

Nanta who is also Kapit MP represented Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu Numpang who is also Rural Development Minister at the ceremony cum dinner.

Jabu said in a text-of-speech read by Nanta: “The ADC/ADS award is a programme under the country’s Gerakan Daya Wawasan (moving with vision) initiative to ensure rural areas achieve significant development in line with vision 2020. The main objective is to create fully developed, prosperous and exciting villages.”

“Gerakan Daya Wawasan instills awareness and develops the village’s potential to bring change and rapid development in rural areas. This movement emphasises a united workforce and efforts besides spurring community participation to plan and implement development programmes in respective villages.”

Among those present at the event were Rural Development Ministry permanent secretary Datu Chaiti Bolhassan who is also ADC/ADS state-level main committee chairman Zairuddin Mat Zuini. Zairuddin represented Community Development (Kemas) director-general Dato Hassan Mohd Amin and state Kemas director Abang Rabaee Muhi.

Nanta said he hoped this year’s winner – Kpg Pejuang Kelulit – could emulate the success of past state champions such as Uma Belor of Sungai Asap in Kapit which won third place at the national level competition in 2011, and Kpg Tanjung Parang of Kota Samarahan which took second place in 2012.

He hoped a similar programme to the ADC/ADS would be organised for longhouses with less than 50 households. Currently, longhouses with 49 units and below are not eligible to participate in the award.

He is making a suggestion to his Ministry and all those involved in this award to create some sort of motivational programme to get such longhouses to participate in village development programmes to achieve the Gerakan Daya Wawasan objective.

The ADC/ADS Award is held every two years at district, state and national levels to inculcate among villagers the need to work together for excellence.

The programme is an annual activity organised by the Rural and Regional Development Ministry in collaboration with Kemas.

The Rural Development Ministry is also involved in organising it here.
