KUCHING: Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) is embarking on a new hotel and resort called the Riverside Majestic Hotel 2, which is expected to be completed in about a year.

Its chairman Datuk Talip Zulpilip revealed the new hotel, which began construction early this year, is located near the Riverside Majestic Hotel and will have a twin tower concept.

“The new one will be built exactly the same as the current one; that is why it is a twin tower concept.

“It will have 288 rooms altogether,” he said, adding it would cost RM46 million.

He revealed this to the press after opening the Ramadan Bazaar at Sarawak Plaza yesterday.

On why they were building the hotel, the Assistant Minister of Tourism said they believed that there is a good market potential.

However, he said whether or not they will build more new hotels would depend on commercial decision.

“The next one (hotel) will depend on the market … it depends on the commercial decision,” he said.

Meanwhile, he said the Ramadan Bazaar at the Sarawak Plaza is one way to promote our culture to foreign tourists as the plaza is near to hotels.

He said if the response is good, similar bazaars will be set up in more shopping complexes in future.

Apart from providing a platform for small business entrepreneurs to sell their products and increase their income, the Ramadan Bazaar also aimed to provide convenience to shoppers and workers in the plaza to buy food for breaking of fast.
