MAKE READING A HABIT: Manyin, second left, is impressed with the wide range of books onboard MV Logos Hope.

DIFFERENT FEEL: The world’s largest floating book fair attracted a sizeable crowd yesterday.

KUCHING: Local philanthropists and businessmen should sponsor Sarawakians to join MV Logos Hope.

Minister of Development and Communication Dato Sri Michael Manyin, who made the call yesterday, said MV Logos Hope was a good training ground for youths as they would gain immense experience and exposure while working on board the ship.

“I believe the structured training programme, work experience and cross-cultural encounters give its crew valuable opportunities to learn new skills and develop their character.

“Hence, it will be most appreciated if there were people who are willing to sponsor some of our youths to participate in volunteerism work on board this ship,” he said when launching the book fair aboard MV Logos Hope, which is berthed at Sim Kheng Hong Port in Pending here.

Among those present were Batu Lintang assemblyman See Chee How, Padungan assemblyman Wong King Wei, DBKU Datuk Bandar Datuk Abang Abdul Wahap Abang Julai, and the vessel’s managing director Lloyd Nicholas.

Manyin said he was impressed the vessel’s 400 crew members could work and respect one another even though they were from many countries and backgrounds.

The world’s largest floating book fair showcases more than 5,000 books covering a wide range of subjects. The subjects ranged from science and sports to philosophy and cookery.

Manyin hoped many families would visit the book fair to help nurture the reading habit among locals.

“We should make reading part of our life because those who don’t read are no better than those who cannot read at all,” he said.
