KUCHING: Kuching North City Comission (DBKU) is getting tired of the bad habits of folks who improperly dispose of their used furniture and household items.

Its Datuk Bandar Datuk Abang Abdul Wahap Abang Julai said this to reporters during a bubur lambuk launching programme organised by DBKU at Kampung Tunku here yesterday.

He said such callous act had created an eyesore as many, especially the Muslims here, buy new furniture during Ramadan to replace the old ones.

“From the reports received by us, many would dump their old furniture and other stuff which can still be reused. This, to me is wastage as it should be given away instead,” he said.

He suggest all the discarded items which are usable be sent to the local suraus or community halls so DBKU need not have to collect and decide what to do with them.

Most times, they would dump the items (which are big) outside their houses, but the rubbish collectors could not dispose them due to the limited space in the trucks.

He was sad reports had emerged citing villagers living in areas under DBKU’s jurisdiction were disposing of their discarded item improperly.

While reading out the newspaper cutting on the matter, Abdul Wahap called on the public to co-operate with DBKU in managing the city’s waste.

“One of the pictures in this article is that of rubbish found here at Kampung Tunku, where I grew up. Personally, as a local and Datuk Bandar, I hope I don’t have to read reports like this again in newspapers. Let’s keep the city clean.”

Among those present at the event were village folks, sponsors’ representatives and DBKU officials.

During the event, Abdul Wahap distributed bubur lambuks to those present and locals in the area.
