‘Rebuilding of school long overdue’

SRI AMAN: The Ministry of Education should expedite the construction of the new building blocks for SMK Simanggang, with re-construction in mind to avoid a recurrence of last week’s fire which destroyed the teacher’s administration block and several classrooms.

According to Assistant Minister of Rural Development Datuk Francis Harden Hollis, a proposal to rebuilt the school was submitted to the ministry in 2010.

“The school which was built 51 years ago out of cement and wood is now dilapidated. The electrical wiring of the building is also very fragile and obsolete,” said Harden, who is also Simanggang assemblyman, during a site visit to the school yesterday.

Harden, who is a former student of the school from1972 to 1973, also disclosed that another letter was also written to the Ministry of Education to supply computers and water tanks to the school.

“We requested 20 units of computers, four printers and fax machines besides 30 of the 1Malaysia water tanks for the students and teachers,” said Harden.

The water tanks said Harden would greatly ease the students who often face low water pressure.

Currently, the school has 1,490 students (545 boarders) and 107 teachers.
