SIBU: Sarawak Bumiputera Teachers Union (KGBS) has called for recruitment of more East Malaysians as teachers to mitigate the problem of ‘homesick’ teachers from the peninsula.

KGBS president Ahmad Malie said schools in Sabah and Sarawak had many teachers posted from the peninsula but their stints do not last.

“This is because when their duration is up, these teachers would ask to be posted back to their home town.

“This has a negative impact on both Sabah and Sarawak when these experienced teachers are transferred back,” Malie lamented.

Earlier, he said they welcomed the ministry’s suggestion to set the minimum criteria of 7A’s for students from the peninsula to pursue teaching programme, while it is set at 5A’s for Sabah and Sarawak.

“Besides academic excellence, the ministry should look at the personality and tendency of students wanting to follow the programme,” he suggested.

Malie reasoned academic excellence alone cannot guarantee performance as a teacher.
