M-League privatisation proposal need to be refined

KUANTAN: A proposal to privatise the M-League need to be refined so that it may make a big impact in the country’s football arena.

Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) deputy president Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah said a rash decision on the matter should not be made as interest and support for the country’s number one sport was currently on the rise.

“It needs a better proposal compared to what is being implemented now. We are worried that an immediate privatisation will have other implications and present complications for FAM.

“That is why we need to look in terms of properties and not privatising. The combination of private energy and FAM’s, as well as ours, will be streamlined soon,” he told reporters after breaking fast at the Sultan Ahmad Shah Mosque in Bukit Goh, here on Monday.

Recently, several parties have thrown the idea of privatising the M-League to improve its management.

The FAM’s Acting Local Competition Committee chairman Datuk Afandi Hamzah said the FAM will carry out a professional national football league in 2015 and that a meeting would be held on July 26 to discuss proposals for the privatisation of the M-League.

Tengku Abdullah said they have basically agreed on the privatisation, but there are still worries about the quality of national football when the league is fully privatised. — Bernama
