KUALA LUMPUR: The National Library (PNM) will continue to enrich its contents through the new media digital facility to encourage reading culture among Malaysians.

Its director-general, Datuk Raslin Abu Bakar said there was a need to have the mobile version of the information content in line with the wishes of the community so that it could attract the interest of readers, particularly the young generation thus making the library as part of their life.

“For example the book and audio elements, we can merge them to make them more attractive and easily accessible using the internet by visitors, including academic materials which could become a ‘smart e-book’,” he told Bernama here.

He said there was also comprehensive literature for children, school students as well as students of tertiary institutions at the PNM, in fact visitors could access various sources free of charge through the database that they subscribed to within and outside the country.

“The PNM must move towards the use of the new media and its information contents must be managed efficiently otherwise it will be difficult to attract the youths to visit the library,” he said.

Among the databases provided are the ‘World E-Book Library’ which has more than two million e-book titles encompassing academic materials, journals, magazines, novels and audio books as well as the ‘Program Skor A’ for school students, and ‘Morrieland’ for children. — Bernama
