Conference to feature latest in artificial intelligence

KUCHING: The ninth International Conference on Cognitive Science (ICCS 2013) will feature the latest developments in artificial intelligence and the human mind.

Professor Jack Copeland from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand will present a paper entitled ‘The Imitation Game: Artificial Intelligence and the Human Mind’ during the four-day conference from Aug 27, which will be held in Malaysia for the first time.

Copeland is a professor of philosophy and also director of the Turing Archive for the History of Computing.

This year, he is the Royden B Davies visiting chair of Interdisciplinary Studies in the Department of Psychology at Georgetown University, Washington DC.

He has also authored several books including ‘The Essential Turing’ (Oxford University Press), ‘Colossus: The Secrets of Bletchley Park’s Codebreaking Computers’ (Oxford University Press) and ‘Artificial Intelligence’ (Blackwell), as well as published more than 100 articles.

Other keynote speakers include Professor Allan Hobson (USA), Professor William Hayward (Hong Kong), Professor Loo Chu King (Malaysia) and Dr Michael Chee (Singapore).

A pre-conference workshop will also be held a day prior to the conference proper to expose participants to the theories and application of the various conference topics.

A total of six workshops, which will be attended by undergraduates, graduate students, lecturers and researchers, will take place at the Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) Central Teaching Facility, Multimedia Theatre and the Computer Laboratory of the Faculty of Cognitive Sciences and Human Development.

ICCS 2013 is organised by the faculty, which is headed by assistant professor Dr Shahren Ahmad Zaidi Adruce, with assistance from UCSI Communications Sdn Bhd.

It is expected to attract researchers and practitioners of various disciplines in Cognitive Sciences — anthropologists, educationalists, linguists and psychologists — from both the academic and industrial sectors.

The conference was last held in Japan.

Papers presented during the conference proper would be published in the Procedia-Social and Behavioral Sciences Journal (ISSN: 1877-0428, Imprint: ELVEVIER) which would be indexed by SciVerse ScienceDirect and Scopus.

Scopus has the largest abstract and citation database of research literature and quality web sources, covering peer-reviewed titles from over 5,000 publishers.
