KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Hamza Taib has expressed his disappointment that certain parties have labelled the Royal Malaysian Police’s (RMP) crime index statistics as unreasonable.

Hamza, in making a clarification, said the crime index statistics for the first six months of this year had seen a decrease of 9.34 percent in crime activities, which included property and violent crime.

“The Royal Malaysian Police (RMP) key performance indicator (KPI) is set up in the same way as that of the Interpol. Although the crime index involves 14 types of crime activities, including property and violent crime, this does not mean that the police are not investigating other cases that have been reported, including minor crime activities. Any crime that has been committed, no matter how minor it is, will be investigated, whether it is under the crime index or not,” he said at a press conference at the state police headquarters in Kepayan here yesterday.

Hamza added all the tasks carried out by the police, including investigation of a case, were based on standard operation procedures (SOP).

“Although there are offences that would be difficult to investigate such as civil cases and summonses, the police will always adhere to the SOP,” he said.

It was reported in a local daily (not The Borneo Post) that certain parties have labelled the police crime index as unreasonable and claimed that the statistics were inaccurate.

Hamza would like to remind those who raised questions on the veracity of the crime index to get their facts and figures right before making any unfounded and unsubstantiated claims.
