KUCHING: A 15-storey apartment complex resembling the iconic Petronas Twin Towers will be built in Kampung Tabuan end of this year.

Minister of Housing Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg said the proposed 432-unit complex would also have a connecting bridge and a sky bridge at the 7th floor.

He said there would be a community hall either on the sixth or seventh floor, a rooftop garden and an orchard to give the whole place a garden ambience.

Each unit will have three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a living room and a kitchen.

“The towers are a solution to land shortage woes in urban areas. The cost of land in urban areas is also very high,” Abang Johari said after breaking fast with members of Kuching Division Journalist Association (KDJA) here yesterday.

“Priority (to own an apartment) would be given to Kampung Tabuan squatters.”

Housing Development Corporation (HDC) will develop this federal government-funded complex.

Abang Johari said the project cost cannot be revealed because contractors have yet to be appointed.

“I have just returned from Singapore to study their public housing facilities. Due to high land cost, building apartments will give more chances to the people to own a house in urban areas.

“An acre of landed property can accommodate only about eight units of terraced houses, and 16 for semi-detached houses. With an apartment complex, an acre can accommodate hundreds of units.”

At the event yesterday, 16 mosques and suraus here each received RM500 donations from HDC subsidiary Daya Builders Sdn Bhd for holding activities and programmes during the fasting month.

Also present were KDJA chairman Sulok Tawie, Daya Builders chairman cum Pantai Damai assemblyman Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, Assistant Housing Minister Karim Abdul Rahman Hamzah, HDC chairman Datuk Dr Abang Rauf Abang Zen and chief executive officer Wan Yusop Wan Mos.
