10 GROs held for flouting immigration regulations

KOTA KINABALU: Ten foreigners, including nine guest relations officers (GROs), were detained by the Immigration Department during a raid at an entertainment outlet in Bundusan, Penampang on Saturday.

State Immigration Department director Noor Alam Khan Abdul Wahid Khan said seven Filipinas and three Indonesians, aged between 15 and 50, were arrested during the two-hour ‘Ops Sayang’ operation which began at 10.50pm on July 20.

“The six Filipinas were detained under Section 6(1) (c) of the Immigration Act 1959/1963 for entering the state capital illegally, while another Filipina was held under Section 15(4) of the same Act for overstaying,” he said yesterday.

Noor Alam Khan added that three Indonesians, a couple and a woman, were also apprehended by enforcement personnel for offences under Section 6(1) (c) and Section 39(b) respectively of the same Act.

He said all those detained had been taken to the immigration office for further investigation.

Noor Alam Khan said those who wished to enter the country must do so through the proper channel otherwise action would be taken against them.

He also said that such operation would be carried out from time to time and urged the public to give their full cooperation to the department by contacting its operation center at 088-488 853.
