PUTRAJAYA: More actions are needed to stop and eliminate violence against women and children in the Asean region, said Asean Commission on the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Women and Children (ACWC) chairman, Datin Paduka Intan Kassim.

She said to achieve the goal, the ACWC meeting which ended yesterday also completed a draft on the declaration to eliminate violence against women and children, especially in this region (Asean).

“We had our meeting yesterday and the biggest achievement is that we completed our draft of the declaration on the elimination of violence against women and children in this region.

“We have been working on this draft since 2011, and made a series of consultation with the civil society and many government departments from our respective countries. For the last two days, we were working on their comments and input.

“Hopefully, the declaration will be signed by the leaders at the Asean Summit to be held in Brunei in October.”

Intan said this after paying a courtesy call on the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry’s secretary-general, Datuk Seri Dr Noorul Ainur Mohd. Nur, here, yesterday together with 20 representatives of ACWC.

The three-day strategic meeting beginning July 22 gathered delegates from 10 Asean countries to deliberate and brainstorm on eliminating violence against women and children, as their main agenda. — Bernama
