MELAKA: The  Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry (Mosti) is studying an innovation by a local Bumiputera company which involves a technology that converts plastic waste into oil with a view of commercialising it for use to address waste problem in the country.

Deputy minister Datuk Dr Abu Bakar Md Diah  said the technology, known as waste conversion pyrolisis, was an innovation by Green Regalia Sdn Bhd to resolve problems of garbage disposal, especially plastics which is non-biodegradable.

“We will get experts from Mosti to look at the technology and then will decide on giving the company the expertise, facilities and fund to develop the  technology,” he added.

He said after everything had been worked out, the ministry would extend the necessary assistance to facilitate the company to build a plant in Tangga Batu here.

“We will try to garner the cooperation of other ministries,     agencies and companies for the project,” he told reporters here yesterday.

Earlier, he attended a demonstration on the technology at Bangunan K-Ekonomi of the Melaka International Trade Centre here.  Also present were Malaysian Nuclear Agency director-general Dr Muhamad Lebai Juri and Green Regalia Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Onnie Zurin Abu.

According to Onnie Zurin, the technology could turn plastic waste into 80 per cent crude oil and 20 per cent gas. — Bernama
