KOTA KINABALU: With the Hari Raya Aidilfitri around the corner, sales are picking up at shopping malls, especially clothing, textile and electrical and electronics shops as well as furniture stores around the city centre.

The crowded city streets and shopping malls at this time of the year are signs that the festive shopping rush has started.

“Business has been busier than usual because Raya is only about two weeks away,” said a shop assistant, who only wanted to be known as Anathras from a leading textile retail outlet.

A sales assistant at SengQ, a leading electrical and electronics appliance dealer in the country, said sales had increased sales markedly since the first week of the fasting month of Ramadan.

He said their outlets at Suria Sabah and Karamunsing experiencing briskier sales.

A father of three, Aimi, 30, plans to spend more than RM1,000 for Raya shopping this year, which would include buying new clothes, food and other stuff.

Aimi said that personally the Raya festivities this year are far merrier than last year.

Another shopper, Liyana Dorimin, 32, said Raya had always been a joyful occasion for her family every year.

She said her family this year would be dressed in Raya garments without a colour theme, as she wishes for the family to do something different.

“Last year, our family’s theme was brown. However, this year I wanted to do things differently, so we are opting for everyone to choose their own colours for their Raya clothes,” she said.
