Appeal dismissed in dangerous driving case

KUCHING: The High Court yesterday dismissed the appeal of a man convicted of dangerous driving.

The appellant was engineer Dennis Lee, 26, from Jalan Song who caused the death of a 38-year-old woman in an accident at Km7 along Jalan Berbanggai-Dabok in Betong at about 5.30pm on May 20, 2011.

On Dec 4, 2012, Sri Aman magistrates’ court sentenced him to two years’ jail and fined him RM8,000 in default six months’ jail. He was convicted under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

In an unrelated case, a man’s appeal against a sentence of two year’s jail and RM10,000 fine for illegally sheltering three Indonesians was dismissed by the High Court yesterday.

Appellant Mohamad Karim Bujang was convicted under Section 26(J) Human Trafficking and Anti-Migrant Smuggling Act 2007.

The act carries an imprisonment up to five years, maximum fine of RM250,000 or both.

He was said to have stranded three Indonesians, aged 23 to 30, in a car on Jalan Sri Aman-Sibu at about 3.30pm on March 26, 2012.

The Sessions Court sentenced the accused to two years’ jail and RM10,000 fine in default five months imprisonment on Dec 7, 2012.
