Inspector charged over detainee’s death

KUALA LUMPUR: A police officer, Inspector S Hare Krishnan, was yesterday charged in the magistrates’ court here with the murder of a detainee, N Dharmenderan, in police custody two months ago.

Hare Krishnan, 40, from Sungai Petani, Kedah, is the fourth policemen to be charged with the offence.

He, together with three others — Sergeant Jaffri Jaafar, 44, Corporal Mohd Nahar Abd Rahman, 45, and Corporal Mohd Haswadi Zamri Shaari, 32 — are charged with committing the offence at the D9 investigation office, 7th Floor, Kuala Lumpur Police Contingent headquarters, Jalan Hang Tuah here between 12.20pm and 2.50pm last May 21.

Jaffri, Mohd Nahar and Mohd Haswadi were charged with the offence on June 15.

Meanwhile, deputy public prosecutor S Nithia informed the court that the prosecution was awaiting the post mortem report and requested the mention date for yesterday’s case on the same day as the case involving the three policemen, which is this Friday.

Magistrate Nur A’minahtul Mardiah Md Nor set Aug 2 for mention.

The accused are represented by lawyers G Sri Kumar, N Kalyana Sundram and S Kavita, while lawyer Latheefa Koya held a watching brief for Dharmenderan’s widow.

Meanwhile, outside the court, Sri Kumar told reporters that Hare Krishnan did not go into hiding, as had been reported by the media. — Bernama
