KOTA KINABALU: The National Council for the Disabled has set up a task force to register the disabled (OKUs) in the country from July 1 to September 31, this year.

State Welfare Department director Etong Terang said the task force had been established at all district Community Welfare Development offices, State Community Welfare Departments and the Sabah Welfare Service Department.

“OKUs who have yet to register or have yet to renew their OKU cards are urged to register during this period,” he said in his speech at the launch of the council’s roadshow held at Wisma Perkeso near here yesterday.

Etong added that this was among the various activities that have been outlined by the council this year.

Aside from that, the council has also urged all its committees to plan and implement programmes and activities that will bring about positive effects to the OKU population in the country, he said.

It also organised the 1Malaysia Netbook distribution ceremony for OKU university students in April, this year.

“A total of 535 students received the netbook,” he said.

The council will also conduct further researches on OKUs since there was very little information on them in the country, he said.

The council also plans to set up its own website to raise awareness on its existence, said the director.
