Election Court strikes out petitions for four parliamentary seats

KUALA LUMPUR: The results of the 13th general election for Kuala Selangor, Sungai Besar, Sabak Bernam and Sepang stay following yesterday’s decision by the Election Court here in striking out with costs the petitions for the four parliamentary seats which were filed last June.

Judge Datuk Zaleha Yusof struck out the petitions after finding that the petitioners did not state clearly and adequately the relevant facts in their applications.

She said the facts provided by the petitioners were too general, like claim of markings on ballot papers which were rejected, but did not state how it happened.

Following the decision, the Kuala Selangor, Sungai Besar and Sabak Bernam parliamentary seats remained under Barisan Nasional, while Sepang, belonged to PAS.

The petition for the Kuala Selangor parliamentary seat was filed by a voter, Muhammad Rashid Muhammad Kasim, Sungai Besar by Mat Ismail Nasir, also a voter, and Sabak Bernama by Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) candidate, Dr Abdul Aziz Bari.

Zaleha also ordered the petitioners for the Kuala Selangor, Sungai Besar and Sabak Bernam parliamentary seats to pay costs of RM20,000 to the Member of Parliament in their respective constituency, comprising Datuk Irmohizam Ibrahim (Kuala Selangor), Datuk Noriah Kasnon (Sungai Besar) and Mohd Fasiah Mohd Fakeh (Sabak Bernam).

The petitioners were also ordered to pay cost of RM30,000 each to the returning officer in the respective constituency and the Election Commission (EC).

On the petition for Sepang, the petitioner, voter Latif Wagiman was ordered to pay cost of RM30,000 each to the returning officer in Sepang and the EC, and RM20,000 to Sepang Member of Parliament, Mohamed Hanipa Maidin.

In the last general election, Irmohizam defeated Dr Dzulkefli Ahmad of PAS with a 460-vote majority for the Kuala Selangor parliamentary seat, while Noriah defeated Mohamed Salleh M Husin, also from PAS, with a majority of 399 votes.

In Sabak Bernam, Mohd Fasiah defeated Abdul Aziz with a majority of 1,644 votes and in Sepang, BN candidate Datuk Seri Mohd Zin Mohamed lost to Mohamed Hanipa, who obtained a majority of 1,104 votes. — Bernama
