SARIKEI: A man claimed trial in the Sibu Sessions Court yesterday afternoon to a charge of voluntarily causing injury during a robbery on July 21.

Ting Liong Kuong, 38, was charged under Section 394 of the Penal Code for hurting a 21-year-old man when he and another man allegedly robbed a computer shop at Jalan Tapah of RM6,000.

The duo were arrested by police in Bintulu on July 22.

The judge ordered Ting to be remanded in the Sibu Central Prison pending the next mention of the case on Aug 29.

Ting was denied bail as the charge against him is very serious.

He is liable to be imprisoned up to 20 years, fined and caned.

The court released Ting’s partner unconditionally upon a request made by prosecuting officer Inspector Anbarasu Gobi.

Meanwhile, Ting had in the morning faced two charges in a magistrates’ court here.

The first charge was framed under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 as he had tested positive for scheduled drugs, while the second charge was for the theft of scrap iron.

He pleaded not guilty to both charges and was ordered to post bail.

For the first charge, Ting was ordered to post RM5,000 bail in two local sureties and RM1,500 to be deposited with the court, while for the theft charge he was ordered to post RM5,000 bail in two local sureties with RM3,000 to be deposited with the court.

However, the bail imposed was later rendered immaterial following his remand in Sibu.
