KUANTAN: Four boats belonging to the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) and four fishing boats were razed in a fire at the Malaysia Fisheries Development Authority’s (LKIM) jetty, here, on Wednesday night.

Pahang Fire and Rescue Department director, Datuk Abdul Wahab Mat Yasin said the 7pm incident was believed to have occurred when one of the boats at the jetty caught fire which spread to seven other boats.

He said the Kuantan Fire and Rescue station received an emergency call at 7.06pm and four fire-engines and 65 personnel from the Kuantan, Indera Mahkota, Taman Tas and Gebeng stations were rushed to the scene, arriving within minutes.

“The rope of the fishing boat that caught fire broke loose and as there was a current, the boat moved and hit the seven other boats lined up at the jetty and these too caught fire,” he told reporters.

Abdul Wabab said the fire was brought under control and completely put out by 10.30pm.

“We managed to save two other MMEA boats and four fishing boats in the incident and there was no loss of life reported,” he said. — Bernama
