KOTA KINABALU: Parti KeADILan Rakyat (PKR) defacto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has volunteered to give evidence to the Royal Commission of Inquiry on the presence of illegal immigrants in Sabah.

Anwar told a press conference before breaking of fast with Sabah PKR leaders and members here yesterday that he would be meeting an officer of the Royal Commission of Inquiry at 3pm in Kuala Lumpur today, Friday.

“I have offered myself to give evidence to the RCI. I will be meeting an officer from the commission at 3pm in KL tomorrow to talk about what issues I will be raising up. The hearing date will be fixed after that,” he said.

Anwar said that since many of the issues are affecting the people in Sabah, he had asked for opinions from his friends in the state.

“They want my evidence of the time I was in Umno and the Government. I will give my fullest cooperation. I gave an earlier statement when I was here that the RCI is a very important issue. I remember Datuk Wilfred (Bumburing) speaking about it in Parliament when he was still in BN… when he was pressing for that unlike other BN MPs.

“I stood up to support but I in fact appealed to the Government to extend that beyond Sabah because what happened in the last election is that those given the status as voters wrongfully were sent out to Selangor and Johor.

“So you see if it is confined to Sabah, it is not going to be a thorough, conclusive finding but notwithstanding you have done it and I have volunteered my participation because I think I would certainly be helpful in trying to explain from what I observed particularly when I was Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister,” he said.

Anwar added that he would like to be asked about what he knows or don’t know, how the alleged operation was done, how transparent was it, was the Treasury involved, was the Cabinet informed.
