Set up special task force to tackle hike in shooting cases

THE Malaysian Senators Council (MSM) urged the Home Ministry to set up a special task force to tackle an increase in the number of high profile murder cases and the widespread use of firearms in the country.

MSM’s chairman of information and publicity, Senator Datuk Boon Som Inong said in a statement yesterday that the special task force should be given the same powers accorded to the special task force set up by the police in 2010.

“The Special Task Force must take on issues related to widespread use of firearms, possession of illegal weapons, shooting incidents, hired killers and gun smuggling,” he said.

Boon said the MSM viewed the current increase in the number of killings, especially incidents where victims are being gunned down at will, seriously.

“The spate of recent killings is as if life has no value anymore,” he said.

The MSM therefore want the government to join forces with all relevant authorities and organisations to prevent more killings and ensure the country remain a safe place to live in.

In the latest high profile killing, Arab Malaysian Bank founder Hussain Ahmad Najadi was shot dead in Lorong Ceylon, here, while his wife Chong Mei Kuan was seriously injured, believed to be by hired hit men.

Apart from Hussain, a man was shot dead while two others suffered injuries in a shooting incident in Ipoh, two others were shot and injured in Bukit Mertajam while a van driver was shot dead in Parit Buntar, all within a matter of days.

In the first two weeks of last month, two teachers were shot dead in Kelantan and another in Kulim. — Bernama
