LABUAN: A 41-year-old teacher here lodged a police report yesterday after she realised she was being cheated by a ‘monk’.

District police chief Superintendent Adzhar Othman yesterday said that based on the report, the woman had received an advertisement in her home letter box in November 2011 regarding a monk’s supposed ability to change her luck.

“The victim then called the number written in the advertisement and the call receiver introduced himself as a monk and later identified himself as a ‘master’.

“The suspect then told the victim that she was going to have very good luck and would get a big fortune.

“The victim was influenced by the suspect’s words and agreed to have a prayer ceremony to receive the fortune but the victim had to first deposit RM600 into a given account number,” he said.

After the prayer session ended, the suspect then sent to the victim a lottery number (4-Digits) and claimed that the victim had won the first prize, Adzhar said.

“Since that day, the suspect had continuously asked for money from the victim and told her that the money was meant for a prayer ceremony for her good fortune,” he said, adding that the victim later felt deceived and made a police report.

According to Adzhar, the total money given to the suspect by the victim amounted to RM280,000 and the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
