KOTA KINABALU: Head of State Tun Haji Juhar Haji Mahiruddin has encouraged the people in the state to make the most out of this year’s Aidilfitri celebration by visiting each other to foster friendship and strengthen unity in this multi-racial society.

“Unity is not just a necessity in politics or ‘siasah’ but a religious obligation. Together, regardless of our race and belief, we can accomplish this by taking the opportunity to visit and seek forgiveness from one another.

“It is our traditional practice to make amends and enhance understanding with each other,” Tun Juhar said in his message in conjunction with this year’s Hari Raya celebration.

He said we should be thankful that we are able to welcome and celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri in a peaceful atmosphere, adding that the people should accord their appreciation and gratitude to the security forces, such as the Malaysian Armed Forces, Royal Malaysian Police, Fire and Rescue and the Department of Civil Defence, for ensuring peace and security in our country at all times.

Meanwhile, the Head of State also reminded the people to not neglect their own safety, whether at home or on the road, as people still tend to invite misfortune during the festive season.

“This is evident in the high accident rate recorded during the past festive seasons, especially on the road,” he pointed out.

He explained further that a study had found that most of the accidents occurred due to human negligence so road users, both drivers and pedestrians, should take extra caution to avoid any tragedy.
