KUCHING: Sarawak Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) Mission held a fundraising dinner on Thursday here for the building of their Segong Youth Centre (or Adis Youth Centre) in Singgai Bau.

Organising chairman Josak Siam in his welcoming speech said the centre cost around RM1.16 million and will be used as a centre for youth development.

“The youth group is an asset to the church as they are the church’s future leaders and missionaries,” he told around 1,000 diners at the Christian Ecumenical Worship Centre at Jalan Stampin here.

The centre once fully completed will have a multi-purpose hall, a hostel, an 8-door double storey longhouse and it would run on solar electricity.

The view surrounding the centre will be picturesque with Mount Singgai at one side and Mount Serapi, on the other. The clean Adis River and refreshingly green forest will add to the beautiful surrounding – making the centre perfect for retreats. As for water supply, Josak said, the centre would need water tanks to pump in water from nearby natural water sources.

The church has also held a jogathon and jumbo sale as well as solicited contributions from ministers and well-wishers to raise funds, Josak said. They still need more funds to run the project.

A kind member of Seventh Day Adventist Church Sungai Pinang, Catherine Jinim, donated an acre of land in early 2005 for the construction of the Segong Youth Centre.

In 2005, 27 volunteers from Alysbury Grammar Scool of United Kingdom came to help the locals to clear the land in preparation for the building.

Among those present at the dinner were Sarawak SDA president Pastor Lawrence Banyie and another pastor, Pastor Jabani Keli.
