KOTA BAHARU: The Kelantan police have set up a special team to investigate an incident in which a package exploded, killing a primary school clerk in Tumpat Sunday.

The team is headed by Tumpat police deputy chief DSP Shariffuddin Yusof.

State police deputy chief Datuk Mazlan Lazim said initial investigations revealed the package contained home-made explosives.

“We have sent some samples gathered from the scene to the Chemistry Department,” he told reporters at the state police contingent headquarters here yesterday.

In the 11am incident, Mohd Yusrizal Mat Zain, 32, who worked at Sekolah Rendah Kebangsaan Manek Urai, Kuala Krai, was killed on the spot when a
package he retrieved from the roof of a multi-purpose vehicle exploded.

The incident occurred at the compound of his in-laws’ house in Taman Seri Periok, Kampung Periok.

On the second explosion which was heard at 4.40pm Sunday, Mazlan said it was not caused by remnants of explosives from the first incident, but by garbage in a polystyrene container.

Meanwhile, the police have detained a man in connection with the murder of Mohd Nazaimi Mat Nawi in Kampung Pantai Damar, Bachok Sunday.

In the incident about 3pm, Nazaimi, 29, who was sleeping in his uncle’s house, was killed when he was stabbed by a man armed a knife.
