GEORGE TOWN: A tourist from China was one of two people injured after they were hit by fragments from an explosion under a car at a parking bay in Lorong Love here yesterday, police said.

The explosion occurred at 2.30pm under the Honda Civic car of a man who was having a drink at a nearby restaurant, said North East District police chief ACP Gan Kong Meng.

He said police found fragments of what looked like a huge firecracker that had been placed under the car.

The force of the explosion badly damaged the rear of the vehicle, he said, adding that the Chinese tourist and a local woman were injured in the legs and were sent to a nearby clinic for treatment.

An eye-witness, Ali Ibrahim, 40, said people in the vicinity panicked on hearing the explosion, thinking that a bomb had gone off.

The owner of the car lodged a report at the Sentral police station. — Bernama
