KUCHING: State DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen is being investigated over his recent statement, Deputy State Police Commissioner DCP Dato’ Law Hong Soon has confirmed.

“Three reports have been received on the matter. All three were lodged in West Malaysia (Peninsular Malaysia) and we have been instructed to carry out an investigation under Section 505 of the Penal Code,” he said.

He did not name the complainants although one of them was known to be Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin.

Law was speaking to reporters after closing the Auxiliary Police Basic Training at Police Training Centre (Pulapol) Kuching along Jalan Puncak Borneo near here yesterday.

Meanwhile, the police also recorded statements from reporters of The Borneo Post and Utusan Borneo who attended Chong’s press conference on Aug 12 for the case yesterday.

Chong, who is Bandar Kuching MP and Kota Sentosa assemblyman, at the press conference expressed suspicion that the Ministry of Home Affairs deliberately allowed crime rates to escalate so as to justify the reintroduction of Emergency Ordinance (EO) or EO-like preventive laws which will make the Minister of Home Affairs the most powerful man in Malaysia.

The remark was condemned by many federal and state political leaders who described the statement as politically motivated by Chong.

At the same press conference, Chong also said the ineffectiveness of the police in fighting crime was due to the small percentage in the force which was assigned to do crime investigations.

According to him, only 14.2 per cent of the personnel in the nation’s police force were directly dealing with criminal investigations or fighting crime and on this issue, DCP Dato’ Law said that was obviously a misperception.

“To say that only small percentages of our men are fighting crime is a wrong perception. All policemen are responsible to carryout out their policing duties at all times. For instance if there is any case happening in front of them, they have to take action failing which they are committing an offence as they have failed to execute their duties as police personnel,” he said.

He said it was an offence under the Police Acts for any personnel to carry out his duties as a policeman whenever required but it must be within the ambit of the law.

Earlier, at the training closing ceremony yesterday, Law presented prizes to trainees who scored highest marks in academic, field and overall performance.

The best in academic training was won by Azizah Hajiat based in the Chief Minister’s Department, with Shafiq Dhiyauddin Abdul Karim, also from the same department, winning the best field training while Kelvin Geter Putit was adjudged the overall best trainee.
