FATAL LEAP: Police personnel investigate at the scene.

KUCHING: A 44-year-old man left behind a suicide note seeking forgiveness from his family members before plunging to his death from the top of the Civic Centre here yesterday.

The incident happened shortly past noon when a security guard patrolling the Civic Centre tower spotted a man climbing over the security railing and, realising what was about to happen, immediately called out to him to stop.

The guard, 53-year-old Lani Nujek, said he could not do anything to stop the victim, who paused momentarily and turned back to look at him before leaping off the ledge.

Lani, who has been working as a security guard for the past 12 years, added it was the second time he witnessed someone committing suicide by jumping from the tower.

The police were immediately summoned to the scene along with medical personnel, who could only certify the victim’s death.

The victim’s Perodua Kembara was later found parked near where his body landed.

A search of the vehicle produced a handwritten letter signed by the deceased on the front passenger seat, which listed the names of his parents, siblings, wife and two sons.

The letter, in part, stated that he was experiencing stress and that no one could help him.

It also asked for forgiveness from his family and requested that they pray for him so that he may rest in peace.

Also found in the car was a receipt indicating the victim had sought treatment at a private hospital earlier around 7am.

Based on his bandaged wrists, it is believed he had sought medical attention after slitting them in an earlier attempt to end his life.

Police later sent the body to the Sarawak General Hospital mortuary and have been in contact with those listed in the letter.
